       25m Denwood Rifle Comp 2025

It's time to come in from the cold.

It's that time of year again when outdoor shooting becomes less a pleasure and more a test of dedication and endurance.

To remedy that, we're having a short indoor rifle series to keep both bodies and competitive spirits warm.

It's free to enter, open to all and easy to take part in.  There's hardly any rules and the few we have are straightforward and simple - check them out at the top of the left sidebar.

29/3/25.  Congratulations to Jim who becomes the first winner of our Indoor Winter Series.

In a closely fought campaign, he was steady and consistent throughout just narrowly outscoring runner up Erni by under 1%.

Well done Gentlemen.

Mike, in his first GARC competition, is also noteworthy with 3rd place.  Proving the assertion that he'd become a contender true, a hurried and harrassed first round was his downfall and I'm sure he'll be back next year with eyes on the prize.

Honourable mentions also go to Nick R who showed that he's a damn fine shot with a Springer and Steve L who was looking like a cert for the top spot but, for whatever reasons (and doubtless to the relief of all others,) never got his final round in.

Thanks to all who took part and see you at the AGM for medals and cakes.

20/3/25.  Mike's reign has come to an end.  He was deposed in a bloodless coup led by Jim who now rules.

Viva el Presidente!

Opposing rebel forces the Stevistas and E.R.N.I. are rumoured to be planning a counter-offensive.

Turbulent times ahead with the added possibility and danger of previously quiet factions such as the Norrieago Springer Front and the Nick Raguan Party making a last minute bid for power.

9/3/25.  Jim put in a strong showing this week with a 44 and 45 while Mike is the first to get all five rounds in which puts him at the top of the table for a couple of weeks.

I get the feeling that Steve, Jim and Erni won't let that stand once we're back to Denwood.

1/3/25.  Bri shot two rounds this week, a 40 and 31 which is both above and below average and totally inconsistent.

He definitely needs more practice.  Or, alternatively, to buy a new gun.

Some cards from Trevor were found from the previous week so he makes a belated midfield entry with a 30 and 31.

22/2/25.  Erni The Lone Gunman done rode up to the range this week, unsaddled his HW100 and rattled off a rootin' tootin' 43 before riding off into the sunset.

A valiant effort which cements his second place and may well see him lifting a gong at our upcoming AGM.

1/2/25.  Sparse but significant best describes this week's comp with only one entrant but didn't he do well.

Our resident Bench Rest addict Steve L made the trip into Denwood and shot four cards with nothing lower than a 45.

This puts him straight to the top of the table with one round to go and an advantageous points lead.

Will his nerve hold?  Will others up their game and take this to the wire?

Stay tuned.

24/1/25.  Decent scoring this week with Erni, Mike and Nick R all having a go.

Erni's 44 keeps him at the top spot while Mike's 43 has him moving up to 2nd place.

Sole springer shooter (so far) Nick R rattled in a sturdy 40 but it was his and Erni's experiment on the 50m range afterwards that raised eyebrows.

Wondering if they could do the same outdoors, some cards were set up halfway on the 50m range and holes were made in them.  Holes even closer to the bulls than they managed indoors with an extra point scored by Erni and a whopping seven additional by Nick.  With a springer (HW77) to boot.

Someone should tell them it's not supposed to work that way.  Are they borderline claustrophobic and can't shoot to their full potential in an enclosed space?

We should be told.

18/1/25.  There were five shooters this evening and some (mostly) good scores.  Erni and his trusty FX got off to an early start and built on his previous entry with a robust 43 which was enough to claim the joint top spot.

Nick R was next.  Shooting his first round with an HW77, his 42 answered the question of whether springers can compete on a level playing field with PCPs.

Bri's first and last shots with the AA 400F were good but things went awry in the middle with an inexplicable miss by a mile resuting in a 35.

Mike got his HW100 zero'd and, as predicted, stepped up a notch with his 45 being a huge increase over his last round and the highest score of the night.

The night's top score and confirmation of Mike's contender status.

Ever dependable Jim closed the show.  With his Daystate playing up, the FX DRS was pressed into service and proved no less capable with a consistent 42 putting him joint top with Erni.

Looks like it's going to be a closely fought comp.

And they're off!

Our Winter series got off to a flyer with no less than eight shooters taking part and providing an interesting spread of scores

First to volunteer was Erni who left his outdoor comfort zone (for, ironically, somewhere more comfortable) to rattle in a rather good 41.

Bri turned up at this point and went into Pressgang Mode.  With just the gentlest of arm-twisting, Bill, Dave, John and Mike were persuaded that having a go would be in their best interests.

Bill and Dave shared an FX DRS and racked up 33 and 42 respectively while John, one of our older and more "casual" shooters, got 14 with his HW100.

      Joint Top Shot Dave with

            his opening salvo.

Mike, a very reluctant and competition-shy entrant was next.  Although new to this sort of thing, he took to it like a duck to water by getting some good quality excuses in early - foremost of which was "It's a brand new gun (HW100) and I haven't got it properly zero'd yet."

Thing is, he then shot a solid mid-field 36 with examination of his card showing consistently placed holes slightly to the right of the bulls backing up his zeroing assertion.

Once he gets that scope set he'll be a contender.

Bri broke out the seldom seen AA400 for 34 and joined Bill and Mike in the middle of things while Craig took a relaxed, unhurried and unworried approach with 18.

Jim casually sauntered in at this point and put his Daystate to good use - a 42 puts him joint top with Dave and makes things interesting.

Jim - in it to win it!

The usual suspects have already put their names down and there's room for plenty more.  Our friendly comps are a great way of socialising, getting more involved and becoming a better shot so give at least one round a try and see how you get on.

You never know - you might like it!
