GARC Benchrest Lite -

           Shooting at Holes Competition 2020

                                 - February -

A busy night at Denwood with three competitions kicking off.  The two pistol comps have been christened with catchy names which leaves the “GARC Benchrest Lite - Shooting at holes - Competition 2020”, while accurate, sounding like something invented by Messrs Grey and Beige.  Suggestions for a name are invited – oh dear, I fear what might be proffered, keep it clean eh?

Any way, six eager participants started at about 7pm.

A new Steel Plate of Holes (SPoH) with 30 holes was used and two problems arose with this development: 1, we couldn’t see the sixth row that was hidden by what the SPoH was supported on, and 2, the holes are a bit too close with some missed shots straying into the adjacent rows.  Nick has volunteered to make a new stand (solving the first problem.)  The second new SPoH will revert to five rows of holes.

The competition.

I think we’ll gloss over the scores (you’ll see them in the table below) except Chris’s 7/10, an excellent improvement over his previous three.  OK, we won’t gloss over the scores as there's too much material for ridicule!  Dead-eye Bri, is flirting with getting back his “nothing over 10m” reputation with a 3/10.  Paul sabotaged himself and Grandson Shaun by bringing an unzeroed rifle, a 7/10 last time becoming a 1/10 this time.  Robert… well what do you expect when you haven't picked up the rifle in two weeks and your first shot is at the SPoH?  Practice, young man, practice.

SteveL is continuing his downward trend, what’s happening with you?  And Shaun, don’t get disheartened as it's far from easy especially with a rifle not zeroed/zeroed in by your Grandad – keep practising and you’ll soon won’t have to listen to the bragging of others in the car on the way home.

Chris aside, we all got off to a below par start.  As a result, Chris took the £6 chips fund for the evening; an achievement marked by his lap of celebration.

I wish he wouldn't do this.

On a final note, I was asked if this could be run every week.  As this competition disturbs the range each time we put out or retrieve the SPoH, I don’t think it's fair on the other range users.  I also don’t want to be doing it every week – it takes organising, scoring (on the night and overall), target preparation and reporting.  If someone wants to do it then I’ll (very) happily pass over the scoring spreadsheet, materials and responsibility.

A suggestion: the table and SPoH is set up each week for practice (we won’t have to disturb the range as much – if the paint chips is not essential for scoring that it is repainted), with scores recorded for the competition on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.
